Summer with Grandma and Grandad

Such a long time since the last blog! Summer is flying by, Joel is back to work, my (Emma's) parents are visiting and have survived 3 weeks of Grandparent Daycare!

We have found the new pace quite busy with both of us working full time. It's the small things that suffer - keeping the washing pile to a managable sized mountain, keeping the fridge stocked, paying the bills, all those small but important things that Joel and I managed to squeeze in when we were home during the day while Cami was sleeping or occupied for a few minutes. But the big things are chugging along as per usual, lots of playing and drawing and cuddles with Cami, catching up with friends, attempting to get/stay fit (Joel is training for the Oslo Marathon, and I have signed up for the 10km in Stavanger).

Ann and Nigel have been here just over 3 weeks now and are doing a wonderful job looking after Cami. They have taken her every weekday, and she loves spending time with her "namma" and "nammad" (Grandma and Grandad)! Her speech is developing so much every day, it's amazing to hear her parotting off little phrases and new words. Some of her latest favourites - donkey, noisy, yummy, mummy (no longer mumma), shoulder. It's really quite adorable and she has us entertained 24/7. Not so adorable is the whingeing and clinginess that seems to peak when I pick her up after work. It's understandable, it's a huge change in her routine to no longer have Joel or I with her every day. We just have to work through it and make sure she feels secure and knows we will be there for her.

We have a wedding in Stockholm to look forward to for our friends Regina and Ulf. We are travelling there on Wednesday and returning on Sunday. Then Monday morning is Cami's first day at barnehage. We were out shopping for all the things on the barnehage's 'list' like waterproof overalls, gumboots, and of course everything has to be labelled. We have 3 days of orientation where we go with her and stay there, gradually starting to go away for a short time then coming back. We hope it will go smoothly but of course have to brace ourselves for a few tears and tantrums (likely mine)!

And last but not least happy birthday to my mum! We are so lucky to have her here to celebrate with.

Back in town!

Hi everyone. Sorry for the radio silence but we have been in oz since before Christmas and Emma and Cami are still there and coming back next Friday (YAY!!!!) but I have been here alone with Cooba for 2 weeks now. We had a great time in oz catching up with family and showing our precious little Cami off! Em still has the camera so we will post an album when she gets back and you can see how she has developed. For me, being with Cami pretty much 24/7 was just awesome and made the trip so very special for me. I really feel we bonded so much and she is at a stage where she is interacting so much more all the time. I remember Emma telling me about a book she was reading whilst pregnant that some Dads have an instant connection with their baby whilst others grows over time. I think I fit into the latter and that is not taking anything away from the love that is so much there from the start, but I feel that everyday my love for Cami just grows so much that it is hard to know where it is all coming from! Maybe also the fact she is very clearly saying "Daddy" has helped ... poor "Mummy" is beaten by "duck", "bird", "tree" and probably many more words soon! Cami became addicted to ice (the healthy variety) and just loved standing at the "esky" sucking on cubes all day long! 

 We visited sim and Clare and had a lovely visit to Flynn's vineyard in Heathcote. I highly recommend the MC Shiraz!

Cami had her 1st birthday Party 1 mth early in oz, but had a great time with all the kids and adults! here she is with her special birthday balloon from aunty Sam.

 We headed across to Perth for 3 days at the end of my trip for a work meeting. Here we are at il-lidos in Cottesloe for dinner watching the sun set over the Indian Ocean whilst Cami was babysat by my old boss Joce and her daughter Eloise.

We snuck in a quick visit to Little Creatures brewery in Freo. Had a few pints of their single batch beer Big Dipper which was an amazing hoppy IPA. Took a pic of the description of the LCPA for some good recipe stealing ideas!

My first weekend back in Stavanger and the forecast was pretty good so we organized a quick ski trip into one of the turistforening hytte - Kvinen. Chuck, Blue, Rayray and Rob joined Coobs and me.

Unfortunately Coobs broke his "thumb" claw on the trip back and had to have surgery to remove it and the other one. He has been stuck inside all week with a bucket on his head which is lucky for him as it has snowed quite a bit at home and been very cold this week.

Lots of snow in the mountains. We had to spend a fair bit of time digging out the cabin to get in and the snow was pretty much up to the roof as you can see from this picture of the snow up past the window in one of the bedrooms. 

 This was our fridge. Just open the front door and leave the beers in the wall of snow!

Now the real reason for this blog post! I have been able to get stuck into a little work on my brewing machine in the last week. Mostly working on welding up the gas beam. Here I am leak testing it. Needless to say there were a few pinholes and I needed to grind back a few spots and reweld. I need it to be completely gas tight as Propane will go through this beam (even though it is only at 0.5psi I don't want to risk any leaks)!

This was the final leak path and now it is all pressure tested at 40 times the working pressure! Tomorrow I will start with tack welding the whole frame/stand up and then I can start piecing it all together. Good stuff! Nothing better than playing with power tools and having a beer at the same time!

Summer Holiday in Fayence, South France

We returned a couple of weeks ago from a fantastic holiday - 2 weeks in the South of France. We were so lucky to be able to take Cooba with us - Joel drove our car down there and Cami and I flew down and met him and Cooba in Nice. It was such a wonderful holiday shared with two other families - Aud Trude, Kristian and Oliver, as well as Mari, Kev, Oscar and Elliot.

One thing I realised when compiling this album is we've become the typical first-time parents and taken 500,000,000 photos of Cami and hardly any of anyone or anything else! We will be sure to remedy this next time. Seasoned Campaigners Mari and Kev are clued onto this and have a much better set of pics showing the house we stayed in and lots of photos of the whole crew, the link to their blog is in the list of links in the top right so feel free to stop by there for some other photos. But boy do we have some cute photos of our little girl!

In other news, Sally arrives tomorrow, and I'm pumped!!

38 Weeks, The Countdown is On!

It has been an eventful couple of weeks. Cyclones in Queensland, floods in Melbourne, a very special little baby arrived in Stavanger (not ours!).

I’m up to 38 weeks and I’m feeling great. I’m really enjoying being on maternity leave (started a week ago @37 weeks) and am working my way through a long ‘to do’ list of bits and pieces around the house, preparing for the baby’s arrival.

My thoughts now are really on the labour and really I’m just hoping and praying for a healthy baby.

My girlfriends in Stavanger threw me a gorgeous baby shower on Thursday night. I knew they had something planned but thought it was meant to be this weekend, so got quite a surprise when I showed up at Aud Trude and Kristian’s house for dinner only to find loads of pink and blue decorations and a room full of girls shouting ‘surprise’!! It was a really lovely evening, lots of baby talk of course and our mates all chipped in and bought us a beautiful hand crafted cradle which we will keep downstairs in our living room for baby’s daytime naps. Thanks so much to everyone and despecially to Louise and Aud Trude for arranging everything, it was a really special night. A baby shower isn’t a Norwegian tradition at all so for many of the girls it was their first (but hopefully not their last – it might catch on)!

On Monday 24^th January we were so excited to hear about the arrival of Mari and Kev’s baby, a boy, Elliot Murphy. He is a little treasure, absolutely perfect in every way and is sleeping and feeding like a champion. His big brother Oscar is so lucky to have a little brother, we can just imagine how much fun they’re going to have growing up!

I’ve also been asked to be a fadder (Godmother) to Aud Trude and Kristian’s beautiful little boy Oliver. His christening is 20^th February, the day before our due date so we hope to be able to make it either with a big belly or a little baby!

I finished quite a big project I started quite some time ago – a rocking chair. I quite liked the idea of having one for use when nursing. I found a really nice old second hand one and decided to try my hand at reupholstering it. I found some great videos on youtube (http://www.youtube.com/user/diyupholsterysupply#p/u/13/jWyZEbNAnmU) giving step by step instructions on how to do it. I bought some fabric on ebay and had to chase up a local upholsterer to buy some tacks and other supplies as it seems DIY upholstery hasn’t really taken off here in Norway and I struggled to find supplies online. Anyway I finally finished the job today. I’m really happy with the end result. I’m actually sitting in it by the fire as I type this blog post! I learned a lot about how to do it so maybe I’ll find some more projects during my year away from work.

So that’s it from us, waiting patiently and putting all the finishing touches on the baby’s room. We’ve now put up some shelves, a heater and curtains for the nursery. Here it is now almost ready for our little one to settle into.



Easter at home

We had a fantastic Easter this year at home finishing off (or starting...) a few projects around the house and having a very social holiday seeing lots of friends. We had a great party over at Louise and Charles' place on Friday night - a dress up party. Those of you that are facebook friends of mine can see the album there, Joel's outfit was a big hit! Then on Sunday we had 12 friends over for a big roast lamb for lunch. Everyone pitched in and brought something along which made things really easy for us, lunch for 12 wasn't so daunting when we only had to worry about the main course! It was a fantastic day which turned into a very fun evening, the last guests left around 2am!

Around the house we've now finished our living room renovation and actually completed the skirting boards in our bedroom which have been missing since December 08! The living room looks fantastic, very modern and fresh. I'm toying with the idea of a wallpaper feature wall, any suggestions? I also got out into the garden for the first time this spring and planted some flowers in the multitude of pots that I'm a little bit obsessed with and can't stop buying! It's wonderful to have everything thawed out now and some longer days, sunshine and even temperatures over 10 degrees occasionally.

Stockholm Long Weekend

We had a fantastic weekend just recently, our Swedish friends (who will be at the wedding btw) Regina and Ulf invited some of us to Regina's parents house on a property about 50mins out of Stockholm. It was a lovely weekend, really relaxed. Some pics here:
